The makeshift party took place on Barceloneta beach, and the police said they had warned those present that they were breaking rules. “Barcelona is the perfect place to have parties, to drink, but this is a big problem: the police are preventing people from enjoying it,” said a party participant, of British origin and 32 years old, who only authorized the publication of his first name, Liam.
Meetings of more than six people in public spaces are prohibited in Catalonia, northeastern Spain, and anyone who violates the rules can pay fines of 300 to 600 euros (R $ 2,000 to R $ 4,000).
The Spanish region recorded a total of 538,008 cases, of which 7,815 in the last seven days, with an occupancy rate of beds in hospitals of 7.84%, according to the government bulletin updated on April 1. Catalonia also had a total of 13,376 deaths, with 16 deaths in the last seven days.
“We warn people who are in large group meetings that they are violating restrictions. And if they don’t put on masks or disperse, they can be fined, ”said a spokesman for the Catalan regional police. He did not say whether anyone from the group present on the beach on Friday received the punishment.
Miquel Samper, Catalonia’s interior minister, told RAC1 radio on Saturday that people should wear masks when they are interacting on the beach, but do not need them during sunbathing or at sea – a different orientation from national law.
Catalonia is one of several Spanish regions to question a rule imposed on Wednesday (31), according to which people must wear masks outdoors, regardless of complying with the 1.5 meter safety clearance. After growing criticism, the Spanish government said the law would be overhauled, without offering dates on when it would be done.
