The small plane flew low over the Lichupté lagoon on the east coast of Cancún in Mexico on Tuesday afternoon. The plane let out pink smoke, when a family, according to several international media, was to reveal the gender of their future child.
«Girl! Girl! It’s a girl! ” shouts a man in Spanish in a video from the place.
Seconds later, the clip shows the small plane crashing into the water.
The police and the National Guard arrived around four o’clock on Tuesday afternoon, and launched a rescue operation.
Two people who were on board the plane were later confirmed dead to local media.
So-called gender reveals have in recent years become a popular event among some expectant parents – especially in the United States. According to the Washington Post, the accident in Cancún is the second celebration so far this year that has ended in a fatal outcome.
In February, 28-year-old Christopher Pekny from New York died when he was to put together fireworks for the party where he was to reveal the gender of his future child. The object exploded, and Pekny had to pay with his life.
It is currently unknown who rented the plane for the mission in Cancún. The two dead have not yet been identified. According to local authorities, one of them must be the owner of the plane.
The accident is now under investigation by the local aviation authority, according to the newspaper Milenio.
