Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro spent more than 2.3 million reais (about 350 thousand euros) on a vacation on the country’s coast between last December and January, in the middle of a pandemic, said a federal deputy.
The documents proving the expenses of the President on his vacation, between December 18 and January 5, were sent to federal deputy Elias Vaz (Brazilian Socialist Party, PSB) by the ministers of the Institutional Security Office (GSI), general Augusto Heleno , and the General Secretariat of the Presidency, Onyx Lorenzoni, after a request for official information made by the parliamentarian.
The data was subsequently sent by the deputy to the local press and shared on social networks.
The amounts spent by the President and his entourage, in the midst of the 19-covid pandemic, were assessed by Elias Vaz as a “slap [bofetada] in the face of the Brazilian ”.

According to the information provided by the General Secretariat of the Presidency, 1.19 million reais (180 thousand euros, at the current exchange rate) were spent on accommodation expenses for the President, his family, guests and the entire team of professionals, food and beverages consumed by everyone, entertainment and spending on land or water travel.
The GSI, responsible for Bolsonaro’s security, reported that 185 thousand dollars (about one million reais, or about 150 thousand euros) were spent on air transport in Brazilian Air Force aircraft for the President’s private events in this period, adding up maintenance and fuel.
In the application, the portfolio stressed that these expenses are foreseen in the Annual Budget of the Air Force.
In addition, expenses of 202 thousand reais (30 thousand euros) were calculated on airfare and daily allowances for members of the secretariat for security and presidential coordination.
In a normal situation, this expense would already be absurd. Now, in a situation where we had almost 200 thousand deaths [devido à covid-19] in that period, the end of the emergency aid [para os mais pobres] and the alleged lack of resources … We clearly had a health and economic crisis, and he [Bolsonaro] goes on vacation. It is no longer an understandable situation for the President to go on vacation at a time like this, and he still spent that money. It is an affront to the Brazilian people, ”said Elias Vaz.
The deputy informed that he will ask the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) to investigate the expenses of the head of state.
“When Brazil recorded almost 200 thousand deaths, the President roasted the people’s money with tours. In the meantime, there is a lack of food on the plate of thousands of citizens hit hard by the crisis, ”added Vaz.
On this vacation, Jair Bolsonaro toured the coastal regions of São Paulo and Santa Catarina.
Brazil, which is going through the most critical moment in the pandemic, totals 325,284 deaths and 12,839,844 diagnoses of infection since the first case was registered in the country, about 13 months ago.
The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 2,816,908 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 128.8 million cases of infection, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.
