The Mozambican Defense and Security Forces (SDS) have “completely” taken control of Palma, the target of attacks by armed groups 11 days ago, spokesman for Teatro Operacional Norte, Chongo Vidigal, said this Sunday, speaking from the village. Palma “is completely [tomada pelas Forças de Defesa e Segurança]. Today, we have completed the clarification of the only area that still needed to be clarified. [limpeza], we did this this morning and it’s totally safe ”.

The “sensitive area” released this Sunday is the village’s airfield and security has been restored, he added.

The next step, he continued, will be the creation of conditions for a safe return of the population, forced to flee following the attacks of 24 March.

“IT’S [uma fase] critical, because it needs a lot of sharpness, a lot of attention and a lot of thought on the part of the Defense and Security Forces, in the sense of receiving this population, but also doing the prophylaxis [a prevenção da infiltração de grupos armados], so that they do not cause problems again ”, added Brigadier Chongo Vidigal.

The governor of the province of Cabo Delgado, where Palma is located, Valige Tauabo, assured journalists that “the enemy was overthrown” in Palma, and the safe return of the displaced must be guaranteed.

“Our presence is because we know that the Defense and Security Forces have given themselves over to the cause of the country. The work that was done caused the enemy to be overthrown, ”he told reporters in Palma.

The violence unleashed more than three years ago in the province of Cabo Delgado gained a new escalation a week ago, when armed groups first attacked the village of Palma, which is about six kilometers from the multimillion-dollar natural gas projects.

The attacks caused dozens of deaths and forced the flight of thousands of residents of Palma, aggravating a humanitarian crisis that has affected about 700,000 people in the province since the beginning of the conflict, according to United Nations data.
