There are only a few days to go before a helicopter fly over the surface of Mars for the first time in history. THE Nasa is finalizing the necessary adjustments for its aircraft to perform aerial reconnaissance of the red planet. Takeoff is expected to occur on the day April 8.

The special agency released the date, which can still be changed, this Thursday, 1, in a video with a cinematic hint and showing simulations of the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter flying over the surface of Mars.

Drone-shaped and weighing less than 2 kg, the aircraft is preparing to carry out a total of five flights on the planet and with distances that can exceed 300 meters. This will be done thanks to the four rotors produced with carbon fiber and which measure just over 1 meter each.

To operate the helicopter it is equipped with plates that capture solar energy. Another important piece is a heating system to prevent damage by the sudden drop in temperature of the neighboring planet during the night. The temperature on Mars can reach up to Minus 125 degrees.

This first mission has exactly the objective of testing the new technology to evaluate if it is possible to make flights with equipment of this type in the atmosphere of Mars. The concern is, in addition to the temperature, with the difference in the atmosphere of the two planet. Mars has an atmosphere about 100 times thinner than that of Earth.

COver time, the expectation is that these aircraft will help trace routes that would be taken by land rovers, such as Perseverance, which recently spotted dust swirls on the planet for the first time.
