Everything you need to know about the Mi Mix Fold, Xiaomi’s first foldable phone

It turns out that the Mi 11 Ultra is not the only strange phone that comes out of Xiaomi this week. In the second part of its two-day presentation, the Chinese company unveiled its first foldable phone, the Mi Mix Fold.

Which follows the same inward folding dual screen format as Huawei’s Mate X2 and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2. What makes this device stand out, however, are the “liquid lenses” on one of its rear cameras.

The Mi Mix Fold features an 8.01 inch 2.480 x 1.860 (4: 3) foldable panel, which supports Dolby Vision, HDR10 + and a maximum brightness of 600 nits.

Xiaomi said it chose that specific size and resolution, as the combination offers the highest screen-to-body ratio for regular videos – 75 percent for a 16: 9 video, versus 70 percent for Samsung and 63 percent for Huawei.

The company also stated that this flexible screen has been tested to last at least 1 million folds, while the precision hinge is good for at least 200,000 folds.

Unlike Xiaomi’s previous folding prototype, this large panel folds inwards, at which point you start using the smaller external screen. This 6.52-inch AMOLED panel offers a narrow resolution of 2,520 x 840, along with Dolby Vision support and a greater brightness of 700 nits.

You’ll find a pierced 20 megapixel selfie camera in the upper right corner here as well.

The Mi Mix Fold has a camera island similar to the Mi 10 Ultra and Mi 10S, but instead of having four triggers, this foldable uses only three – a 108MP main camera (using Samsung’s ISOCELL HM2 sensor), an ultra 13MP wide camera (123 degree FOV) and 8MP “bionic” camera – to offer four shooting modes.

This is achieved by the liquid lens of the “bionic” camera, which uses an engine to precisely manipulate a fluid package, in order to switch between telephoto mode (3x optical zoom or 30x hybrid zoom) and macro mode (up to 3cm).

Xiaomi added that this fluid works well at temperatures ranging from -40 ° C to 60 ° C (or -40 ° F to 140 ° F). Of course, the image quality of this camera is yet to be seen, so we hope we can play with a Mi Mix Fold soon.

To help increase image quality on all cameras, Xiaomi has also developed its own image signal processor, the Surge C1, which the company claims to offer faster autofocus, automatic white balance and automatic exposure.

This is the second internal chip from the company, which has had a long wait since the mobile processor Surge S1 presented in the Mi 5c of 2017.

More specifications

In essence, the Mi Mix Fold has virtually all the features for a modern flagship, with one or two bonuses thrown in the basket. You get a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G processor, up to 16 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of storage.

There is also a generous 5.020mAh battery with support for 67W turbo-charging, both of which are the highest numbers in the current foldable market.

To get the most out of the big flexible screen, this phone comes with not two, but four speakers, and these are tuned by Harman Kardon.

Xiaomi also boasted a “butterfly type” cooling system that, in addition to the steam cooling chamber, thermal paste and graphite sheets, consists of a “micro airbag” structure that somehow increases the heat dissipation throughout device.

On the software side, Xiaomi’s MIUI 12 (based on Android 10) here offers a “Desktop Mode” that hopes to increase the person’s productivity on the big screen. This turns the Android home screen into a Windows-like desktop, which comes with a “start menu”, a command center and support for multiple windows.

Even back to the normal Android interface, there are apps that support drag and drop in split-screen mode. For example, on Weibo, you can look at a weibo post on the left and see the comments displayed on the right.

You can even drag photos from the gallery app on the left for a WeChat conversation on the right. Unfortunately, given that this phone is only for China, it is unlikely that everyday applications for the rest of us will be able to fully utilize these useful features.

Last but not least, Fold offers one-click Stealth Mode to calm your mind. When switched, closes all cameras, microphones and GPS tracking.

Xiaomi is already accepting orders for the Mi Mix Fold before launching on April 16, starting at 9,999 yuan or about € 1,294 or R $ 8688 for the 12 GB model of RAM + 256 GB of storage.

But if you want something even more special, there is a Ceramic Edition (pictured above) decorated with Kevlar texture, and it comes with an impressive 16 GB of RAM plus 512 GB of storage.

The price? 12,999 yuan, which is equivalent to about € 1,682 or R $ 11,308. Note that, due to the material, it is a little heavier – 332g instead of 317g. Unfortunately, all Mi Mix Fold models will only be available in China, so good luck finding one.
