5 LG smartphones that marked the mobile market

LG officially confirmed its departure from the mobile market earlier this week, justifying its departure with the possibility of focusing on other sectors. The South Korean company is one of the manufacturers with the longest history in the market, even after the beginning of the smartphone era.

Incidentally, LG is responsible for some very important innovations for the smartphone as we know it today, and most of the features that we see in a top of the range in 2021, had its debut in an LG model. Thus, we will list five of the smartphones with some of the biggest contributions of the brand to the market.

LG Prada (KE850), the first capacitive touchscreen

The LG Prada (KE850) is a smartphone that is very easily overlooked by technology fans, but which will possibly be the most important on this list. This terminal was announced in January 2007 and gave rise to the image that we now identify as a smartphone: an intelligent device with a capacitive touchscreen to occupy its front.

Although this smartphone gives a feeling of returning to the past, the truth is that Prada has the title of the first smartphone with a capacitive touchscreen, which is often mistakenly attributed to the iPhone, whose announcement took place six months after it arrived on the market. LG Prada.

LG G Flex, the first “foldable”

A few years later, in 2013, after establishing itself as one of the main brands in the sector, LG presents a proposal that, at that date, no other manufacturer dared to launch. The LG G Flex is one of the most memorable smartphones of the brand, for its curved and flexible screen, able to withstand some pressure without leaving.

The idea of LG was related to the countless accidents where smartphones were damaged by not being flexible, so the G Flex solved that problem thanks to the curvature of its screen and chassis. In addition to this detail, the smartphone had a painting that was able to “cure” some minor risks, which were disguised in the painting.

If this special painting was not properly adopted, the truth is that only in recent years have we seen smartphones with folding screens again. Although the concept of LG was different from the current Fold from Samsung or Xiaomi, the truth is that this was the first company to truly bet on a construction prepared to be slightly folded.

LG G3, the globalization of Quad HD

LG G3

LG G3

Probably the most “normal” smartphone on this list, the LG G3 was the most successful smartphone from the South Korean manufacturer. Competing with terminals like the Samsung Galaxy S5 or Google Nexus 6, the G3 was able to match any proposal on the market, having attracted many fans.

However, the great highlight of this smartphone is, again, the screen. The LG G3 was the first smartphone distributed globally to offer a Quad HD screen with a density of 538 pixels per inch, being only anticipated by Oppo, which at the time was a company limited to Chinese territory.

The truth is that this feature was immediately adopted by almost all manufacturers for their top smartphones, and is still today the standard of the premium market, with the G3 being one of the main responsible for the popularity of the Quad HD resolution.

LG G5, the modular attempt and the wide-angle camera

If until now LG has been asserting itself as one of the main manufacturers in the Android market, the truth is that the South Korean company had its main turning point in the LG G5. This terminal surprised the world with its modules, which facilitated the exchange of batteries and brought extra features that left other proposals on the market unanswered.

The truth is that the implementation of this system was not the best, with the G5 theme being essentially dominated by the advantages of the modules, which made it not only difficult to convince the public in the face of the more conventional smartphones from Samsung and Huawei, but also in view of the simpler modular proposal of the Motorola Moto Z.

The weak implementation of the modules was immediately recognized by LG, which did not follow this technology in the G6, and this failure represented a loss of millions and a paradigm shift for LG, starting very difficult years for the company in this sector.

However, we cannot forget another innovation that, unlike modules, is now an essential feature of any smartphone. We are talking about the G5’s wide-angle camera, which at the time was unique in the market and, for several years, LG was the only manufacturer to maintain a wide-angle camera as a secondary camera, despite the insistence of other brands to use sensors telephoto or monochrome.

LG Wing, the sensation of social networks

By 2020, there seems to be signs of recovery from the company’s innovative golden years. In addition to more conventional proposals like Velvet, we also saw a device that immediately became a sensation on the internet.

The LG Wing immediately impressed technology fans and the world with its double screen, which can be opened in a “T” shape, offering a unique proposal in the smartphone market dual-screen. This design opens several solutions to use, viewing videos in full-screen format, maintaining the possibility of using other applications vertically, as well as some uses of Google Maps or even game sessions where multitasking is not only possible, but also encouraged.

The Wing so impressed the public that the famous youtuber MKBHD saw its publication on Tik-Tok explode for several million views.

Honorable mentions

We could not finish this article without failing to mention some devices that, although their impact is not at the level of those mentioned above, also deserve a brief mention on our part.

Starting at the beginning of the last decade, LG surprised in 2011 with the Optimus 2x and Optimus 3D, which in Portugal arrived under the name “Maximus” 2X and 3D. Starting with the Optimus 2X, this was the first smartphone in the world to use a dual-core processor, as well as giving the user the possibility of recording video in 1080p, being able to connect to an external monitor through its HDMI input. On the other hand, Optimus 3D was the first smartphone with two rear cameras, although its 3D use has not gained popularity.

LG’s role as an Android smartphone manufacturer peaked between 2013 and 2015, and it was during this period that Google established close relationships with the South Korean company for the development of the Nexus line. Two of the most iconic models were precisely the Nexus 5 and 5x, smartphones very cherished by the public and which, for many fans, were the two best Nexus to reach the market.

LG is also responsible for bringing to market the first smartphone with a quad-core processor (G4x), the first smartphone with a second screen (V10), the first screen with an 18: 9 format (G6) and the first three rear camera system. (V40).

Interestingly, the LG Rollable was preparing to be soon the first smartphone with a scrollable screen to reach the market, making it another huge contribution by the brand. Unfortunately, the manufacturer decided to put an end to a history rich in innovation, but whose sustainability was never guaranteed. Now the question remains, which we leave to our readers: which company will be able to occupy the vacancy left by LG in the mobile market?

Once again we have to draw attention to an application for Android smartphones that is spreading malware to millions of users. This time, the hackers decided to create a malicious application that impersonated Netflix.

Google has already removed the app from the Google Play Store, but if a user has already installed the app, it must be removed manually.
