The smartphones in the Velvet, Wing and G and V series from 2019 or later are expected to receive 3 Android updates from the year of release, and “certain 2020 models, such as LG Stylo and K series”, will receive 2 updates. Then we would have:
- LG G8 ThinQ, G8x ThinQ e G8s ThinQ
- LG V50 ThinQ and LG V60 ThinQ
- LG Velvet
- LG Wing
For example, Velvet was launched last year with Android 10 and the arrival of Android 11 is scheduled for the coming months. This means that the smartphone is expected to receive Android 12 and Android 13 sometime in the future, assuming that Google will continue with its annual system updates. LG describes this announcement as a “three-year promise” and a “three-year operating system update warranty”.
Android update for 3 years!
The announcement took many by surprise, as unfortunately it was not what LG had been doing with its smartphones while still active in the smartphone market. However, the surprise is good. The company announced a dedicated “software update center” in 2018, but little or nothing has changed in the situation with Android updates. Most of their latest premium smartphones did not have a defined update schedule, at least not until the end of 2021. Earlier this week, LG’s Korean website indicated that some selected models would also receive an update for Android 12.
It is worth remembering that companies that in the past have sinned with updates to their devices such as Samsung, have also made a commitment to their users to update Android also for 3 years, or 3 future versions of Android to be more precise, in addition to 1 year more for security updates. Anyway good news amid the sad news of LG’s departure from the mobile market, it remains to be seen whether the promise will be fulfilled.
