Newton on wearing the Palmeiras shirt: ‘Privilege for me and my country’

Newton Williams, 20-year-old striker, became the first Panamanian player to wear the Palmeiras shirt in the entire history of the club, in the match against São Bento, on March 24. In addition, he is the first athlete born in Central America to play an official match for Brazil’s Greatest Champion.

The player commented on the feeling of representing the country playing in a big club and highlighted the mixture of nervousness and joy that permeated his debut, guaranteeing that he still has a lot to evolve.

– It is a privilege for me and my country to be the first player to wear a big club shirt. I believe that I have to give 100% in each match to leave the name of my country at the top and, above all, the shield. I know the club has a beautiful history and I am thrilled to have come to that club. It was my first minute on the pitch by the main team. I was also a little nervous. I believe that these are moments, which is getting better to face them, doing well and giving a lot to the team above – said Newton.

Part of the process of attracting talent in the American continent that has been carried out by the directors of Palmeiras for the grassroots categories, the young Panamanian is on loan from Costa del Este FC, from Panama, until the end of 2021. Initially hired for the sub- 20, the striker debuted from the base on March 12, in the rout over President Médici, by 8 × 0, with three goals from him in the duel.

– It’s a dream for me. My career is short-term, I just started, I played an outstanding match in the under-20s, I was able to come to the main team and train with great players, it is beautiful. I’ve been working hard to keep up with the teacher’s aim and do my best – emphasized the Panamanian, emphasizing his recent rise.

Currently, Newton has been training together with the professional squad alongside other youths from the base who also gained chances in the starting lineup at the beginning of Paulistão. With the opportunity to share the training ground with experienced players, he revealed their contribution to his early career at Palmeiras.

– For me, it is something very important to share [momentos] with great players, who have great trajectories, like Felipe Melo, Luiz Adriano, goalkeeper Weverton, Lucas Lima, players that stand out. They talk to me a lot, advise me, encourage me a lot and motivate me, pass the truth up close to see how they work. They are very professional on and off the pitch, everyone has an impeccable personality, they are good people, great players, have their stories marked and are players to follow.

Finally, the Panamanian returned the affection of the supporters and confirmed that he intends to honor the colors of the club. “

– I want to give a big hug and a kiss to all supporters of the Palmeiras Family, who support me and received me in the best way. It’s great to know that I have a lot of support on and off the field. I want to thank you for that and, above all, I will do my best and honor this shield to the fullest – he concluded.

Signed up for the Recopa Sul-Americana with the shirt 48, Newton is available to Abel Ferreira to compose the list of matches between Palmeiras and Defensa y Justicia, scheduled for the 7th and 14th of this month.
