The Recopa Sul-Americana was played from 1989 to 1998, when the winner of the Libertadores faced the winner of the Super Cup (a tournament that involved all the champions of the Libertadores) or the Copa Conmebol if the same team won both tournaments.
In 1999, when the palmeirenses won the Libertadores for the first time, Conmebol did not organize the dispute, which was resumed in 2002 after the creation of the Copa Sudamericana.
After collecting more than R $ 200 million in prizes because of its sporting performance in 2020, Palmeiras can reinforce its cash with Recopa.
The tournament champion will receive US $ 1.25 million (about R $ 7 million), while the vice-champion will receive US $ 750 thousand (R $ 4.2 million).
Contrary to what happened in the conquests of Paulistão, Copa do Brasil and Libertadores, the sponsorship contract with Crefisa does not provide for a new bonus because of the Recopa Sul-Americana.
The return game between Palmeiras and Defensa y Justicia is scheduled for the 14th. With the uncertainty about the games in São Paulo because of the pandemic, Verdão indicated to Conmebol the Mané Garrincha stadium, in Brasília, as the stage for the decision.
