Only five matches, in a universe of 115 matches shown by Globo, SBT and Band, surpass the mark obtained by the reality show led by Tiago Leifert, which accumulates an average of 29 points in the Ibope of Greater São Paulo – reaching 5.9 million individuals average.
The index raised by the column includes Wednesday’s episode of Globo’s confinement program, which is usually aired after 12:00 am when football is the attraction on this day. Not counting the quarterfinals, the “BBB21” average remains the same. What is striking is that the games that scored more Ibope than the “BBB21” have similar characteristics: they are either classics or decisive matches.
In the whole of 2020, there were four matches that surpassed the “BBB21”. All of them were shown by Globo. In other words, neither SBT, with Libertadores 2020, managed to surpass the reality show index. On average, the most watched game on Silvio Santos’ channel was the final on January 30, 2021, between Palmeiras x Santos, which scored 25 audience points in São Paulo.
Among the games that exceeded the “BBB21” mark, are the elimination of Corinthians against Guaraní (PAR) of Libertadores on February 12, 2020, which reached 31 points of Ibope. Globo still had the rights to broadcast the competition, but gave up the contract in June of the same year because of the crisis caused by the pandemic of the covid-19.
The other three broadcasts were classics between Palmeiras and Corinthians for the Campeonato Paulista. The game that marked the resumption of São Paulo football on TV on July 22, 2020 scored 30 points. The other two were the finals of the State of São Paulo, played on August 5 and 8 of last year. The first leg and the second leg scored 35 points each.
In all transmissions made in the Brazilian Championship, only one game registered the same index that the “BBB21” is reaching: the decisive São Paulo x Flamengo, for the 38th round of the Brasileirão, on February 25, 2021. There were exactly 29 points, the same number that the reality show gets very easily every day.
It is also worth noting that the game with the highest audience in this period were the classics between Palmeiras and Corinthians in the Paulista final (35 points), which is below the maximum that the “BBB21” achieved this year: 38 points average on February 23, 2020, with the elimination of singer Karol Conká.
The fact is frightening because recent studies by scholars in the advertising market have always stated that Brazilian football is losing its audience because of its mess and organizational problems for other media. Today, the biggest difficulty is to keep the audience of the young audience in a game for 90 minutes. At least in the last 15 months, the trend is confirming itself.
