Current runner-up of the Mineiro Championship, Gavião Carcará has 106 years of foundation, but only 22 as a professional team. Even so, this little piece of history is enough to show the rise of a club, which has already done both at the state level and in the Copa do Brasil.

When they enter the field at Almeidão, from 9:30 pm (Brasília time), Vasco will face a well-trained team that usually grows playing at home.

How did Tombense reach the Copa do Brasil?

Tombense is the current champion of the Interior of the Minas Gerais Championship and Recopa de Minas Gerais. He guaranteed these achievements and his place in the 2021 Brazil Cup thanks to the campaign at the State Championship last year, when he was runner-up, losing the decision to Atletico-MG, by Jorge Sampaoli.

This will be the fourth time that the club will compete in the Brazil Cup. In the editions of 2014, 2016 and 2019, modest appearances, advancing at most until the second phase. The best participation was just two years ago, when the team surprised and eliminated Sport, with a final 3-0 at Almeidão, for the first phase. Subsequently, Alvirrubro fell to Botafogo-PB, in the penalty shootout.

Even without a shine in the Brazil Cup, Carcará was successful in another national competition. In 2014, the club was champion of the Serie D of the Brasileirão. Since then, Tombense disputes the Serie C and seeks access to the second national division.

In the 2021 edition of the Copa do Brasil, Tombense eliminated Nova Mutum-MT before facing Vasco. Playing away from home, he drew goalless and passed the stage.

New strength of the interior in Minas Gerais

Tombense was founded on September 7, 1914, but only became a professional in 1999. After a little more than a decade of competing in the lower divisions, the club rose to the state elite in 2012, disputing Module 1 from 2013.

In eight seasons completed by Mineiro, Carcará went three times to the semifinals. In one of them, last year, he advanced to the decision. He also has two titles from Mineiro do Interior (cup given to the best campaign, except América-MG, Atlético-MG and Cruzeiro, from the State) and the conquest of Recopa de Minas Gerais, disputed for the first time in 2021.

Partnership, own stadium and CT

The project to professionalize the mining team was completed in 1999, through a partnership between the club president, Lane Gaviolle, and businessman Eduardo Uram. However, the partners in Brazil Soccer have already worked together with grassroots categories since 1997.

With the progress of the work and the evolution of Tombense’s results in the field, the project was taking shape on two fronts.

In terms of structure, the club has started in recent years the construction of a Training Center. Currently, the CT has three fields that are used by the professional team, weight training academy and other work structures for the football department. There is still space for the construction of three official camps.

A hotel, which will have 30 apartments, started to be built on the spot. The structure will serve as a focus for the future. Currently, Tombense has more than 20 furnished apartments to house athletes and family members of professionals in Tombos. Players who arrive alone in the city stay in a hotel.

The team plays at the Antônio Guimarães de Almeida Stadium, Alimeidão, with capacity for about 5,000 fans. The lawn is good and offers good playing conditions.

On the field, the plan is always to have competitive teams and players with good technical level. Due to the partnership between Lane Gaviolle, born in Tombos and who touches the direction of the club on a daily basis, and Eduardo Uram, with great experience in the football market, well-known players defended the alvirrubra shirt, like the midfielder Ibson and the lateral- left Juan.

In addition, Tombense benefits from the transfer of athletes who have not played for the club, but who are contractually linked to Carcará. Examples of this were the sales of Lucas Paquetá, ex-Flamengo, and striker Evanilson, ex-Fluminense, which yielded figures for Alvirrubro.

Propositive time x pragmatic time

With 10 points in seven rounds, Tombense is the sixth placed in the Mineiro Championship, with two wins, four draws and one defeat – the first four advance to the semifinals. The campaign is regular, and the feeling within the club is that the team has played more than scored in 2021.

Led by coach Bruno Pivetti, 37, Tombense is a well-trained and tactically obedient team. With a purposeful style, Carcará tries to build the game from the defense field, avoiding direct connections.

Without the ball, he usually squeezes his opponents in the defense field, especially through the midfielders Keké and Caíque, who are very fast and give a lot of work to the opponent’s defense when they have possession. They did not appear in the last two matches of Tombense and are doubts for the commitment of this Wednesday.

The team also has three good definers in the squad. Rubens, who has been in the medical department for the past two weeks and is expected to be able to play, has been the starter. In 2020, he scored 14 goals this season. In 2021, there were three. However, the absence provided the midfielders Daniel Amorim and Alípio with opportunities in the team.

Even with these characteristics, the team from Minas Gerais manages to be pragmatic and adapt to what the game demands. With the positive result, in some moments of the season, the team was compacted and reduced the space between lines to give less possibilities to the opponents, betting on the counterattack. At times, there was success. In others, no.
