The home game on the second day of Easter was a transport stage for one of the favorites to win the most generous European Cup.
– It feels very good. We are lucky to have two home games due to the corona situation, and this is only the second time we get to play with fans again. It’s a great feeling. We are happy, and then we will improve our game in the quarterfinals, said Barcelona’s Luis Frade after the match.
The Spanish big team went undefeated through the group game and thus met the bottom team in the second pool, Elverum. The Norwegian champion team is the first Norwegian on the men’s side to have made it to the cup game in the Champions League, but there was an abrupt stop.
Elverum hung in part with Barcelona initially, but the Spaniards eventually asked for them. At the break, it was 20-10 in favor of the hosts after Elverum had scored only twice in the last ten minutes.
Little voted for Elverum both in defense and attack even after the break. Barcelona cruised to a superior victory in a match where Mamadou Soumare became the top scorer for the hosts with six goals.
Eleven of Barcelona’s goals came on counterattacks. Similarly, Elverum scored only one counterattack.
– Honestly, we knew that Barcelona was going to be a tough opponent. They are good on counterattacks, and today we really struggled to run home. They scored too many easy goals, and that is the biggest difference between the teams, said Elverum goalkeeper Emil Imsgard, who stopped 12 of 51 shots.
For Elverum, Dominik Máthé scored six times, while Tobias Grøndahl contributed with five goals.
In the quarterfinals, Barcelona will face the winner of the double settlement between Ukrainian Motor Zaporozhye and Belarusian Meshkov Brest. There, Motor leads 32-30 after the first game at home.
