Marcus Rashford equalized in the 62nd minute played by Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese was of course also involved in the winning goal. After 82 minutes, a mistake by the home side’s left defense allowed Paul Pogba to get through. The Frenchman did not hit cleanly, but the ladle shot became an assist for Greenwood, who plunged forward and nodded the ball into goal.
United are 14 points behind league leaders City with one game less played. There are now four points down to Leicester in 3rd place and nine to Chelsea in 4th place.
Thanks for the last one from Welbeck
Those who thought United should get it easy against their weakly placed guests were probably strengthened in the faith when Greenwood had a post shot before it was played ten minutes, but then Brighton showed up, and it was former United player Welbeck who scored the first goal of the match in the 13th minute.
After a short tussle with the defender, Pogba finally tucked the ball home. The ball went over Victor Lindelöf and fell on the head of Welbeck, who had a passive Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the back. Nikken went straight to Dean Henderson, but the return came just as straight to Welbeck, and in the second attempt he made no mistake.
Brighton were the most dangerous team before the break. Six minutes after the goal, Lewis Dunk nodded on a free kick from Pascal Gross, and Henderson hit the ball in the crossbar and over. After 27 minutes, the United goalkeeper lost a post with many Brighton players around him, but none of them managed to punish the error.
Solskjær and his players had to go to the break with 0-1 on the board, but in the second half he got to see a team that rose after the break talk.
The equalizer came in the 62nd minute. Edinson Cavani won the ball in the opponent’s half, and the Brighton defense was out of balance. Fernandes pushed at high speed until he was cut down by Joel Veltman just outside the penalty area, but he managed to beat the pass Marcus Rashford converted into 1-1.
Brighton did not give up and in the 71st minute VAR had to be called in to decide if there was a penalty when Welbeck went to the ground with Harry Maguire on his heels as he chased a new Maupay post, this time from the left. If there was contact, the VAR managers came to the conclusion that it was not enough to justify a penalty kick.
United came close to scoring in the 77th minute when Sanchez returned on a finish from Cavani. Daniel James and Greenwood both tried to put the rebound in goal, and from the latter’s foot the ball fell on the net.
United had to wait a few more minutes for the winning goal.
