The IRS, under the influence of the Bolsonaro government, has been investigating Globo artists since last year because of the “pejotization” of the broadcaster’s contracts. The public agency has already assessed more than 40 channel professionals.
The IRS accuses these artists and the Rio de Janeiro broadcaster of collusion to reduce the payment of taxes and to evade the tax authorities through this type of contract. “Pejotização” is nothing more than hiring through an agreement between Globo and the artists’ personal companies, as legal entities.
The Policy: Luciano Huck gives up fighting Bolsonaro and will do something on Globo
For the broadcaster, this type of contract is efficient because it allows professionals to do other jobs, such as series, films and commercials. But for the IRS, this type of contracting is done as a way to reduce the rates due and evade taxes.
William Bonner was one of those investigated. The journalist received a millionaire and retroactive notice. However, the presenter is appealing, as well as Globo.
More than 40 artists from the Rio de Janeiro broadcaster have already been assessed, including 20 news anchors on the channel. Everyone is appealing and so far no decision by the IRS has been released.
By means of a note, the broadcaster informed that: “Globo does not comment on issues related to administrative procedures, own or from third parties, but clarifies that all forms of hiring practiced by the company, including in relation to the journalist William Bonner, are within the law and all taxes levied are paid on a regular basis ”.
“Like any company, Globo is subject to inspections, having also guaranteed by law the right to question, in its defense, possible undue charges from the tax authorities”, he concluded.
