The films were shelved by Warner!

The future of DC Comics Universe in theaters has just suffered two losses: New Gods e The Trench, film derived from Aquaman that would be focused on the creatures of the Pit. According to The Hollywood Reporter the two features were shelved by Warner.

In New Gods, a project that was commanded by Ava DuVernay, we would see the powerful DC characters known as the biggest enemies of Apokolips e Darkseid, entering numerous wars against the space dictator. Tom King, acclaimed comic book writer, known for his love of Lord Miracle, one of the New Gods, had been assisting DuVernay in the script since 2018.

, Ava DuVernay spoke about the cancellation, saying she was upset by the news:

“Tom, I loved writing NEW GODS with you. I am upset that the Barda saga, Lord Miracle, Grandma Goodness, Heavenly Father and The Furies ends like this. Diving into Kirby’s Fourth World was the adventure of a lifetime. This cannot be erased. Thanks for your friendship. And remember… Darkseid is…

Already in The Trench, which would have James Wan | as a director, we would explore more about the dreadful Moat region and the abyssal creatures we saw in the Aquaman film. The film would be all horror and had a script written by Noah Gardner e Aidan Fitzgerald, with Peter Safran acting as a co-producer alongside Wan.

In an official statement, Warner and DC said:

“As part of our DC timeline, some titles in development like New Gods and The Trench will not go forward. We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process and look forward to continuing our partnership with them in other stories. These projects will remain in their skillful hands, should they move forward in the future. ”

One of the pit’s fearsome abyss

The news of the cancellation does not take fans by surprise. Since the announcement, little news about the two projects has been released, which already suggested that there was little investment by the studio in both productions. The statement indicates, however, that we can still see the characters appearing in other stories or, if things change in the future, the resumption of this endeavor.

Currently, the two directors continue to work on DC Comics properties. Ava DuVernay is involved in the Arrowverse series of Naomi, whose pilot is preparing to be filmed, while James Wan | is preparing for the long-awaited Aquaman 2, whose filming is due to begin soon.
