Ex-vocalist of Iron Maiden and declared Corinthians fan, Paul Di’Anno, 62, has been counting on the help of fans to perform knee surgery to walk again. A London pub started a virtual kitty to help the singer, who has been in a wheelchair for six years.

The former Iron Maiden member suffers from serious health problems: a few years ago he underwent surgery to treat an abscess in the lung; in addition, he ended up contracting sepsis (infection caused by bacteria) after a knee procedure and started to use a wheelchair.

The goal of the campaign is to get the amount of 20 thousand pounds sterling, about R $ 155 thousand at the current price. So far, 8,177 pounds have been collected, approximately R $ 63 thousand. The kitty initiative came from Cart & Horses, an old London pub where Iron Maiden held its first shows.

“Paul has waited for the last 5-6 years to have this surgery, but now it seems that the only way to do it quickly is privately. Please donate as much as you can so that we can make this happen for Paul. We know the times they are difficult for everyone now, but every small donation helps. If we all stay together, we can make it happen for him “, says the message on the kitty’s website.

Paul Di’Anno recorded the band’s first two albums: Iron Maiden, 1979, and Killers, 1980. He left the band in 1981, being replaced by Bruce Dickinson, current vocalist.

Corinthians and Socrates

Paul Di’Anno has already come to Brazil several times and, in one of them, he fell in love with Corinthians, to the point, even, of becoming a partner of Gaviões da Fiel, the main organized of the team.

“I am from the east side of London, as if it were the favela there, and I have sympathy for Corinthians. The first time I saw Corinthians playing was on TV, there was Socrates,” he said in an old interview with TV Cultura.

Iron Maiden help?

In a recent interview with the newspaper El País, Paul Di’Anno was asked why the members of Iron Maiden did not help him pay for the surgery. “I talked to Steve Harris [líder do Iron Maiden] some time ago and we exchange messages from time to time. But the relations between them are difficult “, he affirmed.
