Amid the collapse in the health system, the profile of deaths by Covid-19 registered in Mato Grosso do Sul has changed in the last month, the percentage of young people and adults under 70 years of age dying from the virus has grown considerably, experts associate vaccination as the main factor, in addition to the circulating variants.

This Friday, for example, most of those who died were in their 60s – 10 of the 42 deaths reported.

In comparison with the first week of January this year, deaths among the age group above 70 years represented 62.5% of the total by Covid-19.

In the last week of March, they accounted for 31.7% of the total. A 50% drop in relation to the older population, as the newspaper Correio do Estado had already reported.

The difference is in deaths among young people aged 18 to 50, which grew a lot in the past month in Mato Grosso do Sul. The survey carried out by the Correio do Estado points out that this age group represented about 10% of deaths in January and now increased to 20%.

Many of them are hospitalized and in a matter of days they have a negative outcome. The occupancy of beds in Campo Grande already exceeds 100%.

The director-president of the Regional Hospital, Rosana Leite, estimates that the situation has worsened in recent weeks. The specialist points out that there was a significant increase in the number of confirmed cases and deaths in younger patients, according to her, in a matter of days, the patient will die.

“The profile of deaths in Mato Grosso do Sul has changed, we have many more deaths of young people, which is very frightening, new patients arrive at the hospital in a very critical situation and die in a matter of days, which we did not see often at the beginning of pandemic.

Currently in the Regional, we have several intubated patients under the age of 40, which had not happened for two months, ”he said.

The State recorded 217,457 confirmed cases of Covid-19, with 1,502 new registrations on Friday, according to the epidemiological bulletin of the new coronavirus, presented by the Secretary of State for Health (HIS).

Rosana believes that the change in profile in those affected by Covid-19 may reflect the vaccination campaign.

“The youngest age group has not yet been vaccinated, it is very sad to see people who disbelieve the pandemic and the importance of wearing a mask, many lives are being lost. The numbers show that we had a decrease in deaths of elderly people over 70 years old, this happens mainly due to the vaccine, it is very frightening the number of young people who are being intubated and dying in a matter of days ”, said the Regional Director-President.

Since the start of the immunization campaign, 421,974 doses have been applied in the state and 11.28% of the population has already been vaccinated against Covid-19 in Mato Grosso do Sul, until yesterday afternoon, according to the vaccinometer data.

Infectologist André Barbosa points out that the rates are the result of the immunization campaign, mainly in the drop in the number of deaths in the elderly over 70 years, since this public started receiving immunizers more than 30 days ago.

“Considering that this group has already received even the second dose of the immunizer and that they begin to take effect within 15 days later, this reduction is a reflection of the immunization campaign, especially in relation to deaths. These numbers are very important and confirm that vaccination is essential, being the only way to overcome the pandemic. Vaccinated people have a greater capacity to relieve the health system, which at the moment are serving far beyond the limit ”, he reported.

The month of March recorded a record in the number of deaths, the second highest in cases and the record for hospitalizations by Covid-19 in Mato Grosso do Sul. According to data from the epidemiological bulletin, over the past 31 days, 975 people died as a result of the virus and more than 34,000 were infected.

The month of December of last year had proved to be the most lethal since the beginning of the pandemic in the State, with 587 deaths due to the virus, but it was over.

With the end of March, the period became the second most infectious, 34,070 people were infected with Covid-19. The highest number of confirmations in a month was recorded in December 2020, with 34,700.

In early March, the health secretary, Geraldo Resende confirmed the first case of the coronavirus P.1 variant in Mato Grosso do Sul. The case was identified in a patient from Corumbá, he had been in the Intensive Care Unit for several days. (ICU).

With the new coronavirus variant circulating in Mato Grosso do Sul, experts point out that the number of deaths among younger patients may be linked to the variant discovered in January in Manaus (AM).

“It is a fact that the new strain is much more aggressive, the profile of those infected has changed a lot and the length of hospital stay, it was not like that at the last peak, we associated the new strain”, reported Rosana Leite.

In a press conference held by the State Department of Health (SES), when the coronavirus variant had been confirmed in the State a few weeks ago, the assistant secretary, Crhistinne Maymone, explained that the “new strain” brought with it greater transmissibility.

Studies by the manufacturers of immunizers against Covid-19 say that the vaccine is effective against the Brazilian variant P1.

Rosana Leite makes an appeal for the population to respect the biosafety measures and avoid agglomerations. She points out that for the third week the Regional Hospital operates with beds above the allowed capacity.

“We are living in a delicate moment in public health, the use of a mask, alcohol gel and all the necessary measures to prevent the spread of the virus are more than necessary, only then will we be able to get through this moment”, he said.

André Barbosa also says, on behalf of all health professionals, that people are aware of the seriousness of the situation and their attitudes.

“We live in an alarming situation, there is a lack of beds and it is necessary to have the collaboration of everyone, whoever can stay at home, this is the only way we will overcome this crisis”, claimed the specialist.
