Colds and flu: cases of respiratory diseases grow 40% in autumn

Cough, runny nose, fever and headache. With the arrival of autumn, the symptoms of so-called respiratory diseases increase, which are a group of pathologies that can affect organs, such as the lung, nose, mouth and throat. The milder climate and the low humidity of the air facilitate the spread of viruses that can be harmful to our organism.

According to the Brazilian Association of Otorhinolaryngology and Cervical-Facial Surgery (ABORL-CCF), cases of respiratory diseases grow by about 40% in the fall, which considerably increases the demand for medical care in this period.

FLU, COLD OR COVID-19?

The Otolaryngologist at the Hapvida Maceió System, Gleydson Lima, explains that the most common pathologies in autumn are flu and colds. According to the specialist, elderly people over 60 years old and children up to five years old are more likely to acquire respiratory diseases, which can last until the end of winter.

“Flu and cold have common characteristics, but they are diseases caused by different viruses. They may have similar symptoms, however, the flu is usually more intense and long-lasting ”, warns the doctor. The flu can cause fever, muscle pain and fatigue. The common cold is characterized by runny nose, sore throat, nasal congestion and cough.

Covid-19 patients may experience all of these symptoms, but the new coronavirus may also be accompanied by severe shortness of breath (tiredness), diarrhea and loss of smell or taste.

CONTACTS AND PRECAUTIONS

Respiratory diseases are transmitted by air drops infected by air or by direct contact with contaminated secretions. To avoid getting sick at this time of year, some precautions are necessary.

“Wash your hands well and avoid contact with your nose, mouth or eyes in collective environments. Humidifiers should stay on all night and don’t forget to wash your nostrils thoroughly with saline, at least three times a day ”, advises the otolaryngologist.

Gleydson also stresses the importance of maintaining a balanced diet, having a good night’s sleep and practicing physical activities regularly, making the body’s immunity always high. “In case of suspicion, it is essential to pay attention to the symptoms and their intensity. Consult your trusted doctor for the necessary follow-up ”, he concludes.
