This year, there is still the aggravating factor of Brazil experiencing the worst phase of the pandemic of the new coronavirus, and the symptoms of the most common respiratory diseases are practically the same as those of.
The pulmonologist Flavio Arbex explains that, whatever the problem, the patient will be treated as possible infected with SARS-CoV-2.
“Nowadays, we have no right to think differently and we have no way of differentiating symptoms. We are not differentiating the respiratory symptom. Everyone is diagnosed with suspected covid until the tests prove otherwise or not ”, says the doctor who lived experiences like this in the pandemic.
“I had more than one patient who came to the office complaining of rhinitis or attacked sinusitis, but in fact he was covid.”
Even with the need for social isolation, the specialist’s recommendation is to look for a professional.
“It is necessary to find out what the problem is. So, the indication is to be isolated and just go out to go to a doctor or health center, so that you can have an examination ”, recommends Arbex.
Respiratory diseases are frequent in the driest and coldest periods, when people tend to stay indoors and the concentration of pollutants in the air increases due to the lack of rain.
Children, the elderly and people with chronic diseases are the hardest hit, and attention needs to be doubled.
For flu, cold, which are viral infectious diseases, prevention is the same as that used against the new coronavirus: hand hygiene, mask and social isolation.
As for allergic diseases, which are rhinitis, asthma, sinusitis, bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema, Flavio recommends improving the place where people live or work.
“It is important to keep the environment ventilated, avoid dust, dust, mites, carpet, carpets and curtains … humidify the environment, since the dryness of time can hurt like the airways”, he explains.
If it is not possible to use a humidifier, Abex confirms that placing a wet cloth or buckets of water in the office, rooms or bedrooms helps to improve the air.
The doctor points out that chronic patients should keep the treatment up to date.
“It is very common for people with rhinitis, sinusitis, asthma, COPD [doença pulmonar obstrutiva crônica] stop treatment when they are well. Then, that time comes, and there are problems. You cannot stop the treatment in the middle or use the medication only when you are in crisis ”, warns Arbex.
The pulmonologist insists on recommending vaccination against a complaint, which begins on the 12th, and recalls a recommendation that is suitable for any health problem: “Do not use medication on your own, you have to see a doctor. Especially because, in the case of respiratory diseases, medications only reduce symptoms, but they do not cure the disease ”, he concludes.
