SANTIAGO (Reuters) – Chile’s health regulator on Wednesday approved the emergency use of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by Chinese company CanSino (HK :), at a time when the country is moving ahead with a major vaccination campaign and fights an increase in cases.

Chile was the scene of a final-stage test for the CanSino vaccine, and President Sebastian Piñera said in late March that he had signed an agreement to buy 1.8 million vials of the single-dose vaccine.

The vaccine, which received similar approval in China, Mexico, Pakistan and Hungary, is expected to arrive in May and June, the Presidency said, and may help inoculate the country’s most rural populations, as it requires only one injection.
