Drinking orange juice increases risk of skin cancer

Drinking orange juice may seem healthy, but it increases the risk of developing skin cancer. Those who say so are researchers from Indiana University, in the United States of America.

The study, published by the British Association of Dermatologists and quoted, this Monday, by the jornal The Sun, indicates that citrus fruit contains a substance known as psoralen, which makes the skin sensitive to ultraviolet radiation, the main cause of skin cancer.

In the study, it was found that people who drink more than one glass of orange juice a day have a 54% increased risk of developing skin cancer. Those who eat more than one orange a day have a 79% risk.

“This research can help professionals better advise patients to reduce their intake of citrus fruits,” says researcher Harriet Dalwood.

So, anyone with a family history of skin cancer should avoid citrus fruit juices, especially orange, dermatologists advise.
