RIO – Rio de Janeiro set a new record for deaths by Covid-19 in the state. Data released by the State Department of Health (SES) show that Rio recorded on Thursday, April 1, 387 deaths from Coronavirus, the highest number since the pandemic began in March 2020. This is equivalent, in average, to one death every four minutes. The previous negative mark occurred on June 3 last year, with 324 confirmed deaths. The deaths recorded in the system did not necessarily occur in the last 24 hours. In all, 37,114 people were victims of the disease in the state.

Rio also confirmed more than 4,000 new cases of the disease. With this Thursday’s data, the moving average now stands at 2,769 cases and 222 deaths per day. In relation to the figures from two weeks ago, there was an increase of 150% in the number of deaths, which indicates a tendency for growth in the intensity of contagion as it is above the stipulated minimum mark of 15%.

The queue for an ICU bed shows a slight reduction, but remains at a high level. Today, 665 patients are waiting for a place in the ICU in the public health network in Rio. If added to the number of people waiting for an infirmary bed, the number reaches 962 people.

Shortage of inputs: Hospitals in Rio are already beginning to have a shortage of supplies for treatment, report professionals

According to SES, the median for a patient to get an infirmary or ICU bed is already over 24 hours. The calculation takes into account the time in which 50% of patients get a place in bed intended for the treatment of Covid-19. Across the state, 81% of wards to treat patients with Coronavirus and 90% of ICUs are full.

In fact, requests for ICU vacancies for patients with Coronavirus at the Public Defender’s Office have skyrocketed. Of 189 actions recorded by the agency’s night shift in February, 176 were health-related, and 19, specifically Covid-19. Until last Tuesday, March already had 240 actions, of which 68 were on the disease, among other health issues. In a month, the increase in requests for help to the Court was 284%.
