The vaccine, which has already been hailed as a milestone in the fight against the pandemic, has been the subject of questioning since the end of last year, although it has been authorized for use by dozens of countries, including Brazil.

Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the United States has enough contracts with other vaccine manufacturers to immunize its entire population and possibly enough to boost vaccination in the future.

Asked whether the United States will use doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, he said: “This is still in the air. My general feeling is that, given the contractual relationships we have with several companies, we have enough vaccine to fulfill all of our needs without relying on AstraZeneca. ”

At the end of last year, the laboratory and the University of Oxford published data from a clinical trial with two different readings of effectiveness as a result of a dosing error. In March, more than a dozen countries temporarily suspended the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine after reports that linked it to a rare blood clotting disorder.

Also in March, a US health agency said the company’s data provided an incomplete picture of its effectiveness. Days later, AstraZeneca published results showing lesser effectiveness, although still strong.

Fauci stated: “If you look at the numbers (doses) that we will receive, the amount that can be obtained from J&J, Novavax, Moderna, if we hire more, it is likely that we can handle any reinforcement we need, but I can’t say for sure. ”

US President Joe Biden has been under pressure from countries to share vaccines, especially his AstraZeneca vaccine stock. The Brazilian government has been making contact with US authorities, including Fauci, with the aim of obtaining vaccines.
