Covid-19. More than 150,000 teachers and staff tested next week

After the testing operation of all teachers and employees of the pre-school and 1st cycle that took place between March 15th and 19th, the week in which the establishments of these levels of education reopened, from Monday to Friday it will be the turn of teaching and non-teaching staff in the 2nd and 3rd cycles of basic (5th to 9th grade) to start being tested in relation to SARS-COV-2. According to the Ministry of Education, the screening covers about 150 thousand workers assigned to these educational establishments, which reopen doors on the 5th.

But the rapid detection tests will also be repeated in the municipalities where the accumulated incidence of 14 days per 100 thousand inhabitants is over 120 new cases. Thus, educators, teachers and employees of kindergartens, elementary schools and activities to enrich curricula and support for the family will be tested again in 24 municipalities that last week still had an incidence higher than this limit.

The number of municipalities has since decreased to 19 and not all of them coincide with the data from the beginning of last week, according to information presented this Thursday by the prime minister.

Nonetheless, the list already sent to schools with the 24 counties remains and the screening will be repeated in the following municipalities: Alcoutim, Armamar, Belmonte, Castelo de Vide, Cinfães, Cuba, Figueira da Foz, Figueiró dos Vinhos, Golegã, Gouveia, Lagoa, Marinha Grande, Montijo, Moura, Odemira, Penacova, Penela, Peso da Régua, Portimão, Póvoa de Varzim, Rio Maior, Sobral de Monte Agraço, Soure and Viana do Castelo.

To these are added those who are part of the list of 19, released this Thursday, and that will cause the testing to also be repeated in counties that have seen their situation aggravated such as Albufeira, Beja, Borba, Vila do Bispo or Carregal do Sal.

Vaccines will also be tested

Teachers and staff who have already been vaccinated will also be subjected to tests, not least because their immunization process started just a week ago and the development of antibodies happens later.

The Ministry also indicates that between the first testing phase – which started in January and which continued in the host schools that were receiving students during confinement – and the second, which started with the reopening of the pre-school and 1st schools cycle, more than 150,000 antigen tests have been carried out on covid-19.

In the week of reopening, 82 thousand tests were applied to this universe and 80 positive cases of covid (less than 0.1%) were detected.
