Deaths of babies by Covid-19 rise 72% in Minas Gerais and alert parents – Horizons

The shooting of babies victims of Covid-19 worries and launches a new alert to mining families. Deaths of children under 1 year old grew more than 70% in March. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 19 lives have been lost, eight of which in the month that ended yesterday. One of the reasons for the leap is the arrival of new, aggressive and highly contagious strains of the virus.

While children’s deaths increased by 72.7% in the last 31 days, the rest, of all age groups, grew by 31%. The survey was based on epidemiological bulletins from the State Department of Health (SES-MG). The folder, however, does not disclose information about the exact age of the babies, sex and municipality where they lived.

Currently, no vaccine against coronavirus has been recommended and approved by health agencies to be applied to children, as there is a lack of studies to certify the safety of doses. Last week, Pfizer said it would start testing in children under 12. However, the forecast is that the expansion of immunization will only occur in 2022.

Without the main shield capable of preventing the contagion of the virus, fathers and mothers must remain vigilant and continue with quarantine, avoiding risky situations, to protect their children. It is worth emphasizing that the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics does not recommend the use of masks by children under 2 years of age.

In March, compared to February, deaths by Covid-19 in all age groups in the state increased by 31%, from 18,565 to 24,332. Deaths of children under 1 year old, in the same period, went from 11 to 19, a jump above 70%

Another warning to parents is regarding the symptoms of Covid-19 in the youngest. In a recent interview with Today , infectious disease specialist Lilian Diniz, who is part of the Sociedade Mineira de Pediatria, recalled that the manifestation of the disease has been shown to be different from what occurs in adults.

Diarrhea, pain in the belly and vomiting, which are not respiratory symptoms, have been noticed, as well as a runny nose. Skin blemishes can also occur. However, it is necessary to pay extra attention, because, although rare, this may be a sign of Pediatric Multisystemic Inflammatory Syndrome (SIM-P), associated with Covid-19.

There are 82 positive diagnoses so far, 35 under investigation and a confirmed death in Juiz de Fora, in the Zona da Mata.

Patients may have difficulty breathing, kidney disease and acute heart failure. In addition to red spots on the skin, the main symptoms are fever, conjunctivitis and edema in the feet and hands.

Yesterday, SES reported that the Onda Roxa of the Minas Consciente program will be extended in 13 of the 14 regions of Minas. Only the North Triangle regional, the first to be inserted in this more restrictive phase, showed improvement in all Covid-19 indicators and, therefore, will advance to Onda Vermelha.

In the red phase, all activities can work, as long as they comply with a series of rules, such as distance and maximum limitation of people in the establishments. On the purple side, only essential services can work and there is a curfew from 8 pm to 5 am.
