Pregnant doctor dies of Covid and baby is saved by hospital staff

The doctor Cibele Bento Rodrigues died as a result of Covid-19 in the city of Barra do Garças, which is 516 km from Cuiabá, capital of Mato Grosso. The 38-year-old woman was eight months pregnant, but the medical team managed to save the baby in an emergency delivery.

The doctor’s friends said she had a cough and started to feel sick over the weekend. Cibele sought care at a hospital in Barra do Garças, she was admitted on Monday (5/4). Childbirth and death occurred on Tuesday (6/4).

Cibele needed intubation, but suffered cardiac arrest and died before receiving care. It is not known if she had any comorbidity. The doctor’s baby is a boy.

He needed to be transferred to the aerial Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for Goiânia.

The doctor worked in the neighboring city of Barra do Garças, Ribeirãozinho. In addition to Cibele, her parents, sister-in-law and nephews were infected by Covid.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 26 pregnant women have died from the coronavirus in Mato Grosso. The gynecologist and obstetrician Bruna Fagundes Teixeira highlighted that pregnancy is the moment when women are more susceptible to contracting diseases.

“Pregnancy puts the patient in a state of immunosuppression, so she is more susceptible to infections and complications from infections, including Covid-19. They are both clinical complications, which may be necessary for hospitalizations, and also obstetric complications ”, he informed.
