The use of the “Covid kit” has caused at least nine deaths from the use of drugs that have not been proven effective against the new coronavirus. The information is from the Pharmacovigilance Notification Panel maintained by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) and was released by O Globo.
According to the panel, notifications for adverse effects of chloroquine increased 558%, from 139 in 2019 to 916 in 2020, much higher than the use of other drugs. The majority of reported cases (96%) are from Amazonas. The main reported effects are disorders of the nervous, gastrointestinal, psychiatric and cardiac systems.
The sale of hydroxychloroquine, another drug in the “Covid kit”, which had no notification in 2019, registered 168 notifications for adverse effects, the most common of which were tachycardia, nausea and dizziness. São Paulo was the state with the most records (44%).
Anvisa said that the notifications are only “suspicious” and that they may be associated with the use of other substances.
In a note, the Ministry of Health told O Globo that it is following “all updates and publications regarding the treatment of Covid-19 around the world” and that it will create an advisory board with representatives of medical associations to assist in combating the pandemic.
