Local authorities decided on Sunday to anticipate the curfew by one hour, from 8 pm to 7 pm, to apply confinement at the weekend and to close bars, restaurants, cinemas, swimming pools, places of worship and public places. In addition, meetings with more than four people are prohibited.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tries to avoid national confinement, like that of March 2020, which has had catastrophic consequences for the poorest.

India has already administered the first dose of covid-19 immunizations to 79 million people, but only 9.5 million received the second dose. The country has stepped up vaccination efforts in recent weeks and has distributed about 3 million doses a day, but efforts are still insufficient to reach the population of nearly 1.4 billion people.
