India sets new record for covid-19 cases and tightens restrictions – News

The Indian state most affected by covid-19, which includes the megalopolis of Mumbai, adopted new restrictions on Monday (5), while the country registered for the first time more than 100,000 new cases in 24 hours.

With the numbers, the total number of contaminated since the beginning of the pandemic is 12.5 million in the country, with a balance of 165,000 deaths.

In the state of Maharashtra, the hardest hit by the disease, almost 60,000 new cases have been reported in the past 24 hours, out of a population of 110 million (India has more than 1.35 billion).

Local authorities decided on Sunday to anticipate the curfew by one hour, from 8 pm to 7 pm, to apply confinement at the weekend and to close bars, restaurants, cinemas, swimming pools, places of worship and public places. In addition, meetings with more than four people are prohibited.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tries to avoid national confinement, like that of March 2020, which has had catastrophic consequences for the poorest.

India has so far administered 80 million doses of covid-19 vaccines.
