O Canada reported more than 40 cases of people with a illness unknown brain disorder in New Brunswick. People experienced symptoms such as behavioral changes, hiccups and body aches. At a news conference, Dr. Jennifer Russell, the province’s medical director for health, said the condition was “most likely a new disease”.

Of the 43 cases preliminarily identified, 35 have been confirmed, while the others are still under analysis. Russell also said that the disease is similar to Creutzfeldt-Jakob, a fatal neurological condition already known, caused by protein particles.

Researchers still do not know whether the new disease is a variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob or whether it is a totally new neurological disease.

The registered cases were in two points: in the Acadiana Peninsula and in the Moncton region. The cases were identified in different age groups.

“We have not yet been able to find a causal agent, except that everything we have analyzed so far suggests that it is an environmental exhibition of some kind that is acquired through food, water, air, professional or leisure activities”, according to Alier Marrero , neurologist at the Dumont University Hospital Center in Moncton, who is investigating the case, in an interview with the website Medscape Medical News. The link between disease and environmental toxins is also investigated, according to the CBC .

The researchers analyze the possibility that the first case of the disease was registered in 2015 and whether another 11 cases in 2019 are also related to the disease detected in Canada.
