It was announced in advance that the United Kingdom, China, France, Germany, Russia and Iran would hold a digital meeting on Good Friday. One of the EU’s top diplomats, Enrique Mora, had been given the responsibility of chairing the meeting.

In a joint statement, they emphasize the desire to preserve the nuclear agreement and ensure that it is fully implemented. Next week, several talks will be held in Vienna, Austria, where the United States will also participate.

USA: Positive step

The United States confirmed on Friday that it will attend the meeting and that it is open to meeting Iran directly.

– It is still early in the process, and we do not envisage an immediate breakthrough since there will be tough discussions in the future. But we believe this is a positive step, says spokesman Ned Price in the US State Department.

The purpose of the talks in Vienna will be to discuss measures such as sanction relief and implementation of the agreement.

The nuclear agreement with Iran was negotiated in 2015 by the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and the EU. It entered into force in 2016.

Withdrew from the agreement

President Joe Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the agreement in 2018. He also introduced new sanctions against Iran. Iran responded by violating parts of the agreement, and refuses to abide by the agreement as long as US sanctions last.

In a statement reproduced on state television in Iran, the country’s chief negotiator Abbas Araghchi said no new negotiations were needed for the United States to return to the deal. According to him, the way forward is “quite clear”.

Iran’s president is disappointed with Biden’s nuclear policy

“The United States can return to the agreement and stop breaking the law in the same way that it withdrew from the agreement and imposed illegal sanctions against Iran,” he said.

Wanted to join the United States

The EU had proposed that the United States also attend Friday’s meeting, but it was rejected by Iran.

The agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), provides international insight into and places severe restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program. In return, economic sanctions against Iran were lifted.

An important purpose of the agreement was to remove the suspicion that Iran was secretly planning to develop nuclear weapons.
