The head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, warned on Thursday (1/4) that a racism against whites could be emerging in the United States and said that the political correction “taken to the extreme” would have unfortunate consequences.
In an interview with political scientists on national television, Lavrov said Russia had long supported the “worldwide trend that everyone wants to end racism”.
“We were pioneers of the movement that promotes equal rights for people of any color,” said the Russian minister.
But it is important “not to go to the other extreme that we saw during the events of the BLM [siglas do movimento Black Lives Matter] and aggression against whites, the white citizens of the United States. “
Founded in the United States in 2013, the BLM is a movement that gained strength after the murder by a white police officer against George Floyd, a black man who was unarmed in May 2020.
The movement sparked a major debate about racism, the rights of black people and the overthrowing of statues of figures linked to slavery or colonization in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom.
Lavrov accused the United States of wanting to spread what he called “a cultural revolution” around the world and said it “has a colossal chance of doing so.”
“Now Hollywood is also changing its rules so that everything reflects the diversity of modern society,” said the head of Russian diplomacy, who considered it “a form of censorship”.
“I have seen blacks perform in Shakespeare’s comedies. I just don’t know when I will see a white Othello,” insisted Lavrov, for whom “the politically correct will not end well”.
