Couple detained in the U.S. while planning to join ISIS – International

An American couple was indicted on Thursday for supporting a terrorist group after trying to board a ship bound for Imen to join the Islamic State (IS), the Department of Justice said.

James Bradley, 20, of New York, and Arwa Muthana, 29, of Alabama, were arrested on Wednesday as they crossed the boardwalk to board a cargo ship in Newark, New Jersey.

The Department of Justice reported that Bradley had expressed violent extremist opinions since at least 2019 and, in contacts with a secret agent last year, said repeatedly that he admired the Islamic State group.

He also told the agent that he was willing to carry out an attack on a target in the USA, possibly the US Military Academy at West Point.

Bradley had already caught the attention of the FBI after a friend of his was arrested in 2019 when he planned to travel to Afghanistan to join the Talib, according to a lawsuit.

Since then, Bradley “has continued to express his desire to perform violent acts in support of radical Islamic ideology, has directed his support and allegiance to ISIS and has tried to travel abroad to unite and fight for ISIS,” explained the FBI.

Finally, Bradley decided to go to Imen to join Islamic State alongside Muthana, a woman he married in January 2021.

“The threat of terrorism at home and abroad persists,” said Deputy Attorney General John Demers.

Both Bradley and Muthana face up to 20 years in prison on charges of conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.
