Pilar da Ponte 25 de Abril in Lisbon subject to inspection after hitting a merchant ship

Accident occurred this Wednesday night, when the vessel hit the south pillar of the bridge.

Infrastructures of Portugal (IP) carried out this Thursday a technical inspection of the south pillar of the 25 de Abril Bridge, in Lisbon, after a merchant ship hit the pillar in question this Wednesday afternoon.

According to IP, the evaluation carried out on Wednesday detected damages “apparently superficial, with no risk associated with the security of the structure”, information confirmed earlier this afternoon by the CM.

The ship was also the target of an inspection by the Captaincy in the Port of Lisbon, where it would proceed to refuel fuel.There were no reports of injuries or structural damage to the bridge across the Tagus River. The vessel was analyzed to identify any anomalies.

The vessel must remain at anchor on the Tagus River until at least 8:00 pm.
