Formerly antagonistic to Paulo Guedes, Maia defended the thesis of the Minister of Economy in the dispute against Centrão – a group of parties without a clear ideological color that adheres to the most different governments.
Guedes wants cuts through vetoes, or, in the last case, the complete overthrow of the text.
To avoid this, the Budget rapporteur, Senator Márcio Bittar, cut to R $ 10 billion in amendments. In Maia’s accounts, Bittar’s proposal is not enough. He said it was necessary to cut another R $ 25 billion to meet the spending ceiling.

The ex-president of the Chamber went to the Federal Audit Court with 20 congressmen to ask for a recommendation of what should be done.
An eventual negative opinion from the Court may render the full sanction of the Budget unfeasible. Government allies that achieved major amendments could lose resources.
The outcome of the dispute over resources has a deadline: April 22, the maximum date for the Budget to be sanctioned by Jair Bolsonaro.
