UNRWA commissioner general Philippe Lazzarini “looks favorably on the resumption of funding and expresses gratitude for the renewal of relations between the agency and the United States (…) at a critical moment”.
“UNRWA and the United States are historic partners (…) and UNRWA cannot be more satisfied with the link to the United States for essential aid to the most vulnerable refugees in the Middle East,” says the official in a statement.
Washington announced on Wednesday that aid is $ 235 million (€ 198 million).
In particular, the United States will contribute new funding to the UN agency for development projects in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, as well as to aid the “peace process”.
“The North American contribution comes at a critical moment, at a time when we are trying to adapt to the challenges caused by the covid-19 pandemic. We encourage all member states (of the UN) to contribute to Unrwa”, concluded Lazzarini.
