13-year-old boy is killed by a police officer in the USA; mayor calls for new policy of persecution
The death of a 13-year-old boy by a police officer in the city of Chicago, Illinois, in the United States, led Mayor Lori Lightfoot to ask, on Monday, the 5th, to create a new policy of persecution on foot. According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), the shot that killed Adam Loledo was carried out during an operation in an alley in Little Village around 2:30 am (local time) on March 29. The identity of the police officer who shot him was not revealed. Adam was shot in the chest.

The police reported that, that morning, they were chasing an unidentified man and Adam, who would be with a gun. The action came after they were fired for an occurrence of shots fired in the area, the department said.

“Tragedies like these underscore the urgency of reforming the CPD’s policy of persecution on foot, not tomorrow, but now,” said Lightfoot during a news conference on Monday.

While communities across the country face reckoning about police violence, the incident has renewed calls for police reforms in the third largest city in the United States. Chicago police have been under intensive surveillance since 2014, when a white officer shot and killed a black teenager. He was later convicted of second-degree murder.

A video of that incident led to an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice that found that Chicago police routinely violated people’s civil rights, used excessive force and racially discriminated against people.

Video of the incident on Monday was not released. The city’s Civil Police Responsibility Agency (COPA), which is investigating, is preparing to release the images recorded by the police body cameras. The agency described, in a note, its content as “a problematic video”.

Lightfoot also promised to determine how the teenager had a gun, saying that she instructed police officers to use DNA, fingerprints and tracking technology to find the person who gave him the gun.

For days, the police were unable to identify Adam. They said he had no identification and that the 21-year-old man who was with him and was arrested gave the authorities a false name, said Chicago Police Department superintendent David Brown.

Adam’s mother, Elizabeth Toledo, identified his son’s body at the city’s morgue last Wednesday, the superintendent added. An online kitty for Adam’s funeral has raised more than $ 50,000.

According to the “USA Today” news portal, the mayor said she spoke briefly with Elizabeth to offer her condolences and thanked her for her “passionate call for peace”.

“Let’s not forget that a mother’s son is dead,” said Lightfoot. – Brothers are without brother. And this community is suffering again.

Over the weekend, Adam’s family, who dreamed of becoming a police officer, called for peace amid rumors that criminal factions were instructed to retaliate by shooting police cars.

“Nobody has anything to gain by inciting violence,” Elizabeth said in a statement released on Sunday, the 4th. “Adam was a sweet and loving boy. He didn’t want anyone else to get hurt or die in his name.”
